About Me

My name is George and I like volleyball.

I’ve been playing since I was 12 and very quickly became obsessed and it has pretty much ruled my life ever since.

I desperately want to keep volleyball as the main thing I spend time on, so alongside playing and coaching the old fashioned way, I offer online coaching and make YouTube videos about my time as a player and coach.

Feel free to read on for more info on where I started and where volleyball has taken me.

    Starting Out

    NORWICH

I started playing volleyball aged 12 when my school started a program as part of the 2012 Olympics.

This was insanely lucky and I was even luckier to have an incredible coach Tomasz for those first few years, without whom I would never have gotten to where I am now.

Another special thing about this was a few of my friends and my brother started playing too, and even now over a decade later we’re still going strong.

    Volleyball Is My Thing Now

    NORWICH

I was always sporty and gladly played whatever sports I could, but after a few years of playing volleyball nearly everyday I went all in.

I still had a kick around after school but I was starting to take volleyball more seriously, and even managed to win some local tournaments with my friend Zak.

We never quite had the squad size to have a good crack at any national junior competitions, but I look back very fondly on my time playing in Norwich.

    University

    SHEFFIELD

I studied mechanical engineering at the University of Sheffield, but the main reason I went to the Steel City is they had one of the best volleyball teams in the country.

Whilst there I learned more about volleyball from my coach Keith Trenam, especially technically, than I have anywhere else.

By the time I left I’d coached the Uni M1 and W1 teams, and captained the Uni M1 and Sheffield Men’s Super League teams.

    Playing In Europe

    UPPSALA, SWEDEN

After Sheffield, I signed with Uppsala for two seasons to play in the Eliteseries.

This was a step up in level from the Super League in England and another amazing opportunity to develop as a player and a coach.

Alongside playing I also continued coaching working with Uppsala Junior Girls team, who were a real pleasure to work with.

It was also a superb life experience where I met some brilliant people, which is one the things I love most about volleyball.

    Playing for England

Whilst in Sweden I also began my England career, and played for the first time with the national team in Korea. We played a tournament with teams from 8 countries and finished 3rd.

It was a real honour to play for my country, and something I always dreamed of doing. I feel extremely privileged to have had the chance to do this.

Playing with a lot of players I was previously used to playing against in the league also taught me a lot about what it means to be a team and this was super valuable experience.

    Back to the UK

    LEEDS

After two seasons in Sweden I was ready for a change but my body needed a break from the intensity, so I came back to the UK.

I moved to Leeds to work full time as a coach working with a load of different teams. I coached in schools, four junior teams, Leeds Uni M1, and in the second half of the season York Uni W2, W1, M2 & M1.

There are very few people who are able to coach volleyball full time in the UK so I’m again aware how lucky I am.

Of course I also had to play, and had a great season with Leeds helping them win promotion back to the Super League.

    Back to Europe

    ODENSE, DENMARK

I was sorely tempted to stay in Leeds and continue the journey there, but got an offer I was too excited by to turn down. To be the head coach of DHV Odense women’s 1st team who play in the top league here in Denmark.

I’m also playing for the men in the 1st division, and am using the time to try something new and retrain as a setter!

I’m loving my time here as It’s a phenomenal club to be involved with, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
